Description

Inspired by rich Celtic and maritime history of the island, our 'Herring Fleet' collection features herring or 'silver darlings' swimming in the formation of a triskel.

Derived from the Greek word "triskeles" meaning "three legs", the triskel is an ancient Celtic symbol. The meaning of the triskel is diverse, with many varied ideas as to its meaning. From representing a tale of forward motion, or trios thought to signify: land, sea, sky; past, present, future; father, mother, child; or representing the three Celtic worlds; the spiritual world, the present world and the celestial world.

Details

  • The stud earrings are handcrafted in recycled sterling silver.
  • The earrings measure approximately 12-13mm.

* The herring has held significant cultural and economic significance across Scandinavia, the British Isles and the Isle of Man for many centuries, with evidence of herring fishing on the Island as far back at the 13th century. By 1871 it was estimated that one in five of the total Manx population was employed in fishing. The landed fish were then prepared, barrelled and salted to preserve them by the 'Herring Girls', women who travelled from port to port throughout the fishing season following the fleet. *
